While the iPod is an amazing device for mobile music lovers, the fact remains it can be tough to discover new music as you're busy listening to your favourite songs.
Unless, of course, you discover a little 'ol tool like iFill, for Windows and Macs.
As its name suggests, this free-to-try-but-$25-to-buy software fills up your iPod -- be it the shuffle, nano or classic (not iPhone or iPod touch, unfortunately) -- with MP3s from many hundreds of free radio stations available on the web.
Actually, this program can record multiple radio stations simultaneously -- and it downloads the music directly to the USB-connected iPod, so none of the files take up space on your computer's hard drive.
And it doesn’t matter what kind of music you're into -- be it pop, rock, hip-hop, alternative, classical, techno/house, R&B, gospel, reggae, and so on -- as there's something for everyone between the many radio stations you can select in the software. Some stations are dedicated to various decades, such as '60s, '70s and '80s. Each song becomes its own MP3 file on your iPod, all available in a new playlist called iFill the software creates for you. You can also select how much space on the iPod to fill up (such as 25 percent).
One downside, however, is the first few seconds of each song might be cut off a tad (though you can tweak when the recording begins in the Options menu) and sometimes cuts off the very end, too. But hey, at least there's no DJ banter or annoying commercials -- though you might catch the odd station ID.
Try iFill for free and see what it's like to wake up to a brand new iPod every morning.
