Worried that your child might, oh, I dunno, wander into a well and get trapped there? Well good news, helicopter moms and dads: You can keep tabs on them courtesy of a number of Big Brother-styled cell phone plans, which use cell phones' GPS features to keep constant tabs on where kids wander.
How do teens feel about all this? They aren't thrilled, to say the least, but some actually say they see a silver lining. According to one teen, the knowledge that parents will know exactly where they've gone offers a convenient excuse against peer pressure enticing kids into undertaking hazardous behaviors -- like, say, exploring a storm drain. Blame my parents, not me, becomes an easy out.
Of course, it's a simple matter to bypass this kind of surveillance: All a child would need to do is leave his phone at a trusted friend's house -- or "forget" it at home -- ensuring that GPS monitoring would never be able to follow him as he wandered down into the local well. Then again, a teenager separating himself from his cell phone may be far too much for him to handle, even if it means a taste of freedom.
