Stoke your creativity with these website gems

By Ted Kritsonis
As the Internet continues to evolve, the capabilities of the World Wide Web continue to grow by offering cool and useful Web-based applications that you can use anytime and anywhere.

These sites are all about creativity, meaning that they can help you forge something using content you already have or ideas that you want to put down on a screen. They also represent a cross-section of what's possible using only a Web browser, especially since some of these have nothing in common with each other. That's the beauty of Web 2.0 applications - the possibilities behind these robust tools is impressive.

RRRipple

There are plenty of ways to share photos and video on the Web, but RRRipple offers a bit more privacy than others do. For example, if you upload photos and video clips from a vacation you took with other family members, you could share them with whomever is also a RRRipple member. They would get an email telling them that new content has been uploaded to the site for them. They can then view and download whatever they want, which is great because photos aren't low-resolution JPEGs like they are on Facebook. This extends to documents, notes and messages as well. You can have multiple groups at any given time, each with access only to specific content you've uploaded.

Floor Planner

If you're moving into a new home and wondered what it might look like on the inside with certain colours and furniture, then Floor Planner may be the site for you. It allows you to design your home based on whatever measurements you want room-by-room. You can then add the colours you want, along with windows, doors, furniture, floors, carpets, rugs and other knickknacks. At first you can view it in 2D, but you also have the option of seeing it in 3D and zoom in for a closer look. A personal account on the site is free, meaning you get one design. A Plus account is $29 for the year and it gives you five designs.

ShirtsMyWay

When it comes to men's dress shirts, you might find yourself a bit eccentric or just not like what's usually available in retail. ShirtsMyWay offers an alternative in that you can add your own personal touch to everything on the shirt like the measurements, the fabric used and the colour scheme. You can design everything from within the site, and place an order when you're ready. Shipping to Canada is free, though you can expect to pay a bit of a premium if your shirt is a little bit elaborate. Still, this is a cool way to create something you can actually wear.

FontCapture

Some of you might admire your own handwriting or someone else's, but did you know that it's possible for you to create a typing font out of that? FontCapture allows you to scan written handwriting to create a customized font for your computer. You only need to print and fill out the provided template, scan it and upload it to the site, where it will then process and give you a file you can download to add to your PC or Mac's existing library of fonts. All of this is done within the site, so there's no software involved.

PureSolo

Not everyone likes the idea of being a Canadian Idol in front of a national TV audience, but would-be singers who love to voice their own renditions of popular songs can do so with PureSolo. The site offers sheet music, karaoke and guitar tabs, so you can either belt out a tune with your voice or provide your own flavour using your own specific instruments. You can record your session with the included elements to create your own MP3 or CD-quality track to share with friends when you're done. It's not free to use this but it is to browse, and it all works right within the site.
