Gelaskins

Gelaskins

As the Tech Guide Editor and a self-proclaimed geek girl, I see a lot of cool tech every day. So to narrow my fave down to eight? No easy task, my friends. But I'll give it my best shot. First up is Gelaskins. I love a good decal, and this Canadian company takes personal computers to a whole new level. They not only protect your laptops (and MP3 players, too) but they do it in style. If the eye-catching designs aren’t enough, the company gives the artist a cut of the profit from each purchase. How cool is that? Learn how to trick out your computer with great accessories.

Urban spoon

Urban spoon

With just a simple shake of my iPhone, Urban spoon – one of many great apps available completely for free – locates a great restaurant for me, wherever I am. The app lets you select cuisine, price range and neighbourhood, and instantly suggests great places to eat. I can’t tell you how many great little places I’ve found in my city because of this app. Learn more about what you can do with iPhone.

LG Digital photo frame with DVD player

LG Digital photo frame with DVD player

I’m fascinated by digital picture frames, but couldn’t justify spending the big bucks on a one-trick pony. Like so many technologies, the digital photo frame is advancing and incorporating other functions; the LG frame is my favourite, because it’s also a great portable DVD player. The frame is a slick black, and the price is just as attractive: just $289. For more on digital photography accessories, click here.

Nintendo DS

Nintendo DS

I commute about an hour a day to work, and I couldn’t survive the trip without my Nintendo DS. The cute handheld gaming system (the world’s most popular, too) has a variety of addicting games. (My favourites: Flash Focus, Mario Party and BrainAge.) Plus, the new version - the Nintendo DSi – has already hit American shelves, and comes with two video cameras, a memory card slot, wi fi internet and downloadable games. Motorola's green phone

Motorola's green phone

It’s official: the green revolution has hit the tech world. I love that we’re using biodegradable laptops, recycling our ancient computers and investing in eco-friendly new technologies. Want more proof? Check out Motorola’s new cell phone – made entirely from recycled water bottles. It’s affordable and easy-to-use, too. Check out the full review here.

BucksMe

BucksMe

Call me a latte junkie, but I use this app on my iPhone all the time while I’m traveling. For 99 cents, BucksMe uses your iPhone or your iPod touch’s GPS to instantly locate the nearest Starbucks to you, and shows you on an interactive map. For added fun, you can enter your order in the app to remember for next time.Learn more about what you can do with iPhone.

Wii Fit

Wii Fit

When I can’t make it to the gym, I spend an evening with the Wii Fit for a serious workout. I was skeptical at first, but after a night of hula-hooping and a following intense yoga session, I was hooked. For $89.99, this addition to my Wii attracts all sorts – from my 14-year-old cousin to my 60-year-old dad. Still not convinced? Find out what gaming console is right for you.

Skype

Skype

My best friend lives in Australia, and we’re both in serious money-pinching mode. But, lucky for us, Skype provides us free video chatting – in astonishing quality, great sound and little or no time lapse. And the company recently announced that the application is headed for iPhones and BlackBerrys – so I’ll be able to stay in touch with friends and family anywhere I go. Learn how to get the most from Skype.
